What is the smoking ban?

The smoking ban is essentially legislation that prohibits smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces in the UK.

Why? 

It is generally acknowledged that smoking is the greatest single cause of preventable illness and premature deaths in the UK killing around 106,000 people annually.  This figure is approximately 3 times higher than for industrial injuries and accidents over the same period.  The dangerous of passive smoking are clear, the legislation aims to remove this danger from the workplace and enclosed public areas.
